What is 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) for Students?

Two-factor-authentication (2FA), also known as multi-factor authentication, is the process in which a user accesses a computer system or software application using two forms of authentication to login. The forms of authentication are often described as using, “something you know”, “something you have” and “something you are”. One factor is typically logging into a system with a username and password (something you know). The second factor can be the use of a cell phone app or hardware token (something you have) or, in some cases, the use of a fingerprint or retinal scan (something you are). Without at least two forms of verification, the login will fail.

Why does CI need 2FA?

Attacks on CI data and credentials are becoming more sophisticated every day. Using 2FA will provide an additional layer of protection to safeguard your CI identity and data.

When will 2FA for Students Start?

2FA for Students is currently live and required for all students.

The 2FA for Students rollout will began May 4, 2020 and ran through June 2, 2020. During this time students logging in to the myCI portal will have the option to either enroll with 2FA at that time, or bypass the two-factor-authentication enrollment process and continue to their myCI home page.

After June 2, 2020 all students will be required to be enrolled in 2FA to access myCI and any application or service accessed via your myCI credential.

Please check the 2FA knowledgebase articles or the ITS Information Security 2FA web page for additional information.
